I've put myself on a daily challenge. Each day, I try to do something natural, raw or frugal. Now, several days have already gone by, so I will have to start mid challenge.
Today, I hung dry my laundry. I know, I know, not a huge thing, but one step toward reducing my electric bill, and toward being a bit more natural. Last week, I made my own laundry detergent, as well. 18 lbs of chemical-free, lavender scented laundry detergent. And it was cheap, too! I'll post on that one another time.
This last weekend, I conned the Honey-Do into putting up a new clothesline for me. Unfortunately, it was kind of a cheapy line I bought, and its sagging and fraying, already. In the long run, it will be more economical to pick up a better quality line. However, just the idea of freshly, line dried clothes has me very pleased!

The Beauty Routine Challenge; Oil Cleansing Method with Coconut Oil
I've always had oily skin, and break outs. As a teenager, I washed my face with Ivory soap and it worked. Over the course of the last ten years, my skin has taken on a ruddy hue, and I have struggled with treating it so that it was more even. A lot of harsh cleaners stripped my skin, making it even oilier.
From what I understand, the more you strip your skin of oil, the more oils it produces to compensate. I have heard a lot of good things about the oil cleansing method, with specific use of coconut oil. I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out.
I used the coconut oil as a base for a facial scrub, to which I added an equal part sugar, and about half a part of lavender buds and some lemon balm. I've been using this exclusively for almost a month, now. This is what I have found...
-My skin looks and feels healthier than it ever has. I use the scrub once a day, working it into my skin, then splashing my face in warm water and patting dry with a clean towel. At first, my skin will feel slightly oily, but it does not take long for the coconut oil to soak into the skin.
-I have had no break outs. Weird, huh, since its oil?! Even the skin on my chest isn't breaking out, and we've already started into 90 degree weather!
-The blotchiness has settled down, quite a bit. My skin tone is starting to even out. Its not perfect, but I don't know that that will ever happen. I am keeping my fingers crossed, however!
Overall, I am very satisfied with the results of this cleansing method.

Ren's Throes of Empty Nesting
This is going to be a bit of a brain dump...be prepared...
My daughter just finished her second year of college. My son graduates in two weeks and goes off to college in the fall. With this realization, and an atypical hardship last fall, I've started a new phase in life: trying to live frugally, naturally and more healthy. I've been working on couponing and stockpiling the pantry, in the off chance that my children decide to move home and stay here forever, or in the off chance that something happens to me and I am unable to provide for the house. I've also started working on living more naturally for health purposes.
I have concurrent autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as a condition known as Chiari Malformation, where basically, the back part of my brain has been slowly slipping into my brain stem. I don't get around so well, and I've been reading a lot about more holistic treatments and how food can affect health. My son also suffers from severe asthma, and I have always tried to keep the house as clean as I can, without exacerbating his asthma from chemical cleaners.
As a teenager, I would never have been caught dead without makeup and my hair done. I've always been a bit of a girlie girl in that respect, I guess. I sew, and make a lot of my own clothes, which is both a blessing and a curse; I have great fashions that cost pennies on the dollar, but I also have closets full of clothes... My beauty routine was once very expensive. But, since I have been sick, my beauty routine has kind of gone by the way side, in favor for just day to day survival.
Several years back, I was a total career woman, working mad hours and focusing on my job. Now, I am a stay at home mom, doing my grad work online, and trying to keep a comfortable house. These are my experiments and trials...
